North hollywood high school - Ref# 25-4563
september 27, 2024
Event: Football game
Date: Friday, September 27, 2024
Number of students: 50 (band and drill team)
Funding sources: CAP

Activities
  • Details pending

Itinerary
  • Leaving Poly at 6:00 PM
  • Show starts at 7:30 PM, ends by 9:00 PM
  • Leaving venue (Northridge) around 9:00 PM
  • Arriving back at Poly by 9:20 PM

Educational benefit
  • Poly Band and Drumline students have been learning new music and rehearsing since the school year started. Football games are the only events that Band, Drumline and Drill Team comes together to perform and showcase what they have been creating (choreography, chants, and music) to their community. Poly drill team has been choreographing chants and body movements to the band's music, rehearsing nearly every day after school. Band and Drumline has been rehearsing Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays after school. Performances, especially to their peers and teachers in attendance at the football games provide motivation for students to practice diligently and show up for attendance regularly.

VAPA anchor standards
  • Performing/Producing/Presenting | Analyze, interpret, and select artistic work for presentation
  • Performing/Producing/Presenting | Develop and refine artistic work for presentation
  • Performing/Producing/Presenting | Convey meaning through the presentation of artistic work

Learning objectives
  • Students will be able to perform on their instrument a repertoire representing various genres, styles, and cultures with expression, technical accuracy, tone quality, and articulation in an ensemble setting.
  • Students will be able to perform on an instrument in a small ensemble, with multiple harmonic and melodic parts according to instrumentation.
  • Students will be able to perform still and moving body shapes that show lines (e.g., straight, bent, and curved), change levels, and vary in size (large/small).
  • Students will be able to join with others to make a formation and work with others to change its dimension.
Pre- and post- learning activities to reinforce student progress towards listed objectives
  • Students have been rehearsing for the past month of their parts individually, as a section with similar instruments then coming together as a full ensemble (band and drill team). During these individual practices and sectionals, their peer section leaders ahve been guiding their groups on practice techniques and holding them accountable so that each individual performer knows their part and can perform it accurately. Allowing students more performance opportunities motivates them to practice more regularly with the expectation of doing well when representing our school in a community function.

Event: CSUN Wind Symphony Concert
Location: CSUN's Plaza del Sol Performance Hall
Date: Wednesday, November 6, 2024
Number of students: 20 - 25 (primarily Poly band students)
Funding sources: CAP

Activities
  • Watching the CSUN bands (wind ensemble and wind symphony) perform, includes Poly music alumni

Itinerary
  • Leaving Poly at 6:00 PM
  • Show starts at 7:30 PM, ends by 9:00 PM
  • Leaving venue (Northridge) around 9:00 PM
  • Arriving back at Poly by 9:20 PM

Educational benefit
  • Exposure to high-level musicianship where students witness collegiate-level performers and professional conductors, providing insight into advanced musical techniques, interpretation, and ensemble collaboration. This experience broadens their understanding of musical standards and inspires them to improve their own skills.
  • Learning from repertoire where CSUN's wind symphony typically performs diverse and challenging pieces, including classical works and contemporary compositions, Poly's music students can explore new styles and genres, gaining an understanding of the historical, cultural, and theoretical context behind the repertoire.
  • Inspiring high school music students by exposing them to a college music program and motivating them to consider pursuing music at the collegiate level, whether as a major, minor, or extracurricular activity, It helps demystify what a university music experience looks like and provides an opportunity to connect with potential mentors and role models. One of our alums will be performing that night in the ensemble so seeing their former classmate perform a higher caliber of music can motivate our current students to practice and potentially pursue a similar post-secondary pathway.
  • Allows for cultural enrichment where concerts like those performed by the CSUN's wind symphony offer a rich cultural experience, helping students develop an appreciation for the arts, critical thinking, and the emotional impact of music. This experience aligns with broader educational goals in building well-rounded, culturally literate individuals.
  • Creates the possibility of networking where high school students can meet and engage with university faculty, current students, and other high school musicians, fostering relationships that can benefit them academically and professionally in the future.

VAPA anchor standards
  • Responding: Perceive and analyze artistic work
  • Responding: Apply criteria to evaluate artistic work

Learning objectives
  • Students will improve their ability to critically listen to live music performances, identifying key elements such as dynamics, articulation, intonation, balance and phrasing in a wind ensemble setting. Students will contribute to a verbal discourse that provides reflections or critiques of the concert, focusing on the musical elements and overall performance quality.
  • Students will observe and analyze how professional-level wind ensembles work together to achieve musical unity, precision, and expressiveness. This includes the way the collegiate group dresses (formal black attire), their posture (sitting with back straight), and behave (no talking in between pieces, not playing out of turn, waiting for conductor to cue the entire ensemble into a piece of music).

Pre- and post- learning activities to reinforce student progress towards listed objectives
  • Learning activities before the event will include watching videos and noting how ensembles walk onto the stage, when to clap and the roles of specific individuals (such as concertmaster tuning the group before the conductor comes onto the stage).
  • Post learning activities will include verbal discourse that shows the similarities of what happened in the concert to the videos we watched, how people in the audience reacted, thoughts on the pieces of music performed, instruments they saw in the ensemble that are not represented in our own ensemble, and what to fix in our own poster and behavior in order to model after CSUN's ensemble to look more professional.

This aligns with Anchor Standard II (relate artistic ideas and works with societal, cultural, and historical context), helping students understand how music supports narrative storytelling in film and television.

VAPA anchor standards
  • Performing/Producing/Presenting | Convey meaning through the presentation of artistic work
  • Responding | Perceive and analyze artistic work
  • Responding | Interpret intent and meaning in artistic work
  • Responding | Apply criteria to evaluate artistic work
  • Connecting | Synthesize and relate knowledge and personal experiences to make art
  • Connecting | Relate artistic ideas and works with societal, cultural, and historical context to deepen understanding

Pre- and post- learning activities to reinforce student progress towards listed objectives
  • Pre-activities:
    • Students will be doing a foley unit in preparation for Halloween by storyboarding as a class on a short film, spotting the scenes for specific sounds, experimenting with different types of materials to create desired sounds, and conveying instructions to a guest audio engineer on recording the sounds and manipulating the frequencies with effects like EQ-ing, compression, reverb, etc.
    • Students will be developing basic skills in sound design and underscore creation by using digital audio workstations to create a simple underscore to short films with the focus on using music and sound to evoke motions and enhance storytelling.
  • Post-activities:
    • Students will be presenting music they have created for a short film to a film composer and doing a short Q&A with him and discussing what composers look for when invited to be on set during filming. Having visited the sets, students will have context to what the guest composer is demonstrating.

SANTA MONICA PIER AQUARIUM

Saturday, january 26, 2024
Event: Santa Monica Pier Aquarium
Date(s): Saturday, January 26, 2025; 6:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Number of students: 81
Funding sources: ELOP

About the trip
A field trip to an aquarium can be justified as a cultural arts experience by highlighting the intersection of nature, art, and culture. The vibrant colors and patterns of marine life inspire artistic creativity, while many cultures have long used the ocean as a source of artistic and spiritual expression. Aquariums often feature artistic exhibits and immersive designs, teaching students about exhibit curation and the blending of science and visual art. This trip can encourage students to reflect on how nature influences human creativity across different cultures, making it a rich, cross-disciplinary educational experience.
