About the course

Why we teach what we teach

OUR MISSION

The purpose of this course is to provide an overview to students about the music industry as it pertains to the technology it uses to create and produce music for the mass market as well as most aspects of the industry.

In this course, students will learn the fundamentals of music in reading and writing notation, composing original music through digital means, identification by sight and sound of various instruments, evaluate the social impact of history and cultures on music in the United States and across the world, and to explore career opportunities in the music business with an emphasis on traditional and non-traditional pathways.

course length

Our five-month course, sectioned into two quarters, is offered in the fall (August to December) and again in the spring (January to June) and may be taken up to three times for course credit to satisfy fine arts requirement for graduation. This course is now eligible for CTE credits.

schedule

Poly HS retains a 4X4 schedule in which there are four quarters in the year. Each quarter equates to one traditional semester's length of learning. There are only four periods per quarter and each class is roughly 88 minutes in length.
